betapharm is the fourth largest generic pharmaceuticals company in Germany, headquartered in Augsburg, with MAT September 2005 gross sales of €177 million. History and Recent Evolution
betapharm was formed in 1993 by Thomas and Andreas Strüngmann, the former owners of Hexal, and accordingly was run as part of the Hexal group. In March 2004 the 3i Group, a leading Private Equity and Venture Capital Firm acquired betapharm. Under the new ownership, the management team had undertaken a number of key initiatives that have further strengthened betapharm’s position within the marketplace. Through the transition phase, betapharm has maintained the high-performance culture of its sales force. The Company today is viewed as a leader within the German generics sector with a strong reputation, differentiated brand, broad product portfolio and pipeline as well as an experienced high-quality management team. In February 2006, Dr. Reddy’s successfully completed the acquisition of betapharm Group.
Products
betapharm differentiates its product portfolio through the ‘beta’ brand, the breadth of the portfolio and its focus on high value segments. betapharm’s diversified product portfolio consists of 140 different drugs in various strengths and dosage forms. The Company’s marketing efforts are concentrated on products with the highest revenue generating potential (recently launched products and those with strong market shares), thereby optimizing the management of the Company’s resources. The Company has developed a very strong product pipeline with access to all key patent expirations and losses of exclusivity through 2010 that have current branded sales in excess of €10 million per product.
Sales & Marketing
The core strength of betapharm is its sales and marketing capabilities, which include nationwide salesforce targeting primary care physicians and pharmacists and a key account management targeting SHI funds. These efforts are actively supported by a direct marketing team & the public relations program. The effectiveness of betapharm’s sales and marketing capabilities is evidenced by the consistent market out-performance of new product launches which helped the Company to expand its overall market share and accelerate revenue growth.
