Dr.Redddy’s has implemented a number of initiatives to rationalize the consumption of natural resources through prudent process improvements, disciplined resource use. One of the initiatives is Zero Liquid discharge plant (ZLDP) . We installed ZLDP systems in all our Active Pharma Ingredients (API) plants.

A wide range of Active Pharma Ingredients are manufactured in our sites, with a view of conserving water, the effluent treatment facility is designed in such a manner the gamut of treated effluents could be recycled and reused in the system thus achieving Zero Liquid Discharge.

This was achieved by isolation of every single waste stream for characterization and selection of treatment methods were guided by extensive laboratory checks and research analysis. After which we broadly segregated effluent in (a) Process effluent (b) Non process effluent. 

Simultaneously we undertook waste minimization process (WWP) with a singular focus on waste reduction at source, recovery and recycle. Under this program the generated effluent after passing through various in plant recovery process and treatment is routed to centralized treatment facility.

Here effluent is subjected to bio degradation process followed by Reverse Osmosis (RO). The permeate from the RO process is recycled back to plant for reuse. The RO rejects are sent to Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) for treatment. From MEE they form two streams viz the condensate and the concentrate. The condensate is sent back to the plant for reuse, the concentrate passed through the Spray dryer for drying.  Finally the solids from spray dryer sent to common secured land fill facility.

Evidently no wastewater is released outside the plant premises for disposal, thus constituting Zero Liquid Discharge
