Dr K Anji Reddy

Dr. K. Anji Reddy was the Founder-Chairman of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Limited (DRL) headquartered in Hyderabad, India. He was born in Tadepalli in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. After graduating from Bombay University in B.Sc. (Tech) with specialization in Pharmaceutical Science and Fine Chemicals, Dr. Reddy obtained his Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. Then came a stint at the state-owned IDPL, following which he became an entrepreneur and founded DRL in 1984. Under Dr. Reddy’s leadership the company has evolved into a pioneer in the Indian Pharmaceutical space.
Dr. Reddy’s passion for research had led DRL to take up basic drug discovery research in 1993, thereby becoming the first pharmaceutical company in India to do so. Dr. Reddy’s mission was to provide innovative new medicines for healthier lives, at a price the common man can afford. Dr. Reddy was also the founder of Hyderabad based Institute of Life Sciences, a public-private partnership with the Government of Andhra Pradesh focused on cutting edge research in Life Sciences. A humanitarian, Dr. Reddy’s work in the field of outcome based institutionalized philanthropy is legendary. His sustained efforts in this area have had a tremendous impact on improving the lives of nearly 5 million underprivileged people in India, especially youth and children.
With the intent to work closely with the Indian Government and fulfill his vision of a poverty-free India, Dr. Reddy had set up Naandi Foundation in 1998 as a Public Charitable Trust. Operating in multiple states, this is one of the biggest social enterprises in India and provides clean drinking water and mid-day meals to children and farmers. Safe motherhood and newborn care were very close to Dr. Reddy’s heart, which is why he had founded NICE Foundation, dedicated towards improving maternal health and combating infant and child mortality.
Dr. Reddy served as a Member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry, Government of India. He was a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (APIDC). He was also the President of The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance and had served as a Board Member of GAIN, Switzerland (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and a Board of Director for TB Alliance, New York (Global Alliance for TB Drug Development).
Dr. Reddy was a recipient of several national and international recognitions and Lifetime Achievement Awards. In April 2011 the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan (the third highest civilian award in the country) for his contribution to the Indian Pharmaceutical industry.
